A gift from a saint
Derek Perry reports on the gift of a potential lifesaver for Africa

On Monday 1st September 2003, a team of four members of Tavistock Community Church, led by Derek Perry (projects co-ordinator for Great Lakes (Africa) Mission), drove to Lytham-St-Annes. The reason for this was to receive a wonderful gift of a purpose-built landrover ambulance.

Recently G.L.A.M had sent many letters & e-mails all over the country to various organisation asking for help in funding for ambulances. St. John Ambulance Brigade answered within a few weeks, offering us one of their older ambulances (see picture right). The team were shown around the St. John building by the divisional superintendent Kevin Olsen, pictured below with Derek exchanging the documents for the vehicle.

Tavistock Community Church need to raise £7,000 to pay for a forty-foot container to transport the ambulance and much more needed medical equipment to one of their new projects in Central Africa. We are also looking for help in equipping the Landrover 110 series with a good selection of mechanics tools, spare parts, tyres, wheel brace, jack and a winch. We also need someone who can take a look at the electrics for us.

PLEASE PRAY
This ambulance is one of the most vital pieces of equipment we've been given so far. We already have enough equipment packed ready to put in a 40-foot container, with more supplies in stock and more being offered on a weekly basis. These goods are so desperately needed in Africa. There is a building with staff on standby in Fort Portal in Uganda ready to receive these goods. Fort Portal is about 50 miles from Bunia in the Congo, where civil war is leaving thousands of people maimed and wounded.

Please pray:
- for the resources to come in to enable us to send a container. It costs around £7,500 to get a container to Fort Portal.
- for a manual and toolkit for the ambulance (a Landrover 110 series 3)
- that these supplies will reach the people that so desperately need them.

We are hoping soon to be able to have the ambulance on display at various locations in and around the Tavistock area. For more information on how you can help us in our work, or if you can help with equipping the ambulance or help in any other way, please contact us on 01822 616625.
