Some
of the hundreds hungry to learn how to walk with God

n
May 2003, a team of six people - five of us from the UK, one
from the US - went to Kenya to assist in a Christian street
crusade and conference in Soweto, a slum area on the outskirts
of Nairobi (not the township in Johannesburg!). The event
was organised and led by a local team of pastors and bishops
working together to serve people living in conditions of terrible
poverty.
The trip
faced some daunting obstacles in the run-up to leaving, the
main one being the ban on British flights to Kenya due to
threats of terrorist activity three days before our team was
due to depart for Nairobi! We believed that if there was going
to be any terrorist activity, it would be targeted more at
symbols of rich Western imperialism, not at the poor districts
of the city. (And in the event, any danger came more from
the driving conditions on the roads than from Al'Qaida!)
When
we finally arrived at Nairobi, we were overwhelmed by the
welcome and affection we received by the local Kenyans; excited
by the response to the crusade and conference; inspired by
the enthusiastic praise and worship led by the band and choir;
and privileged to receive such care and hospitality from the
local Soweto police.
This
report tells about the team
that went to Nairobi and the team that works in Nairobi, why
we went to help with the crusade and conference, and details
on how you can support
the work God's doing in Nairobi. There are details on some
of the social issues that
the team came into contact while they were there, and an entertaining
picture gallery (which includes
shots of some of the visit's lighter moments!).
