...and crushing the junk! Ken Joynes on sending computers to Nairobi and to the great computer graveyard in the sky...

In February, we sent three fully equipped computer systems to Nairobi to assist Bishop John Bosco Muchanga, leader of several Shield of Faith churches in Kenya. Colin Bond (pastor of Tavistock Community Church) met John Bosco when he was teaching at a pastor's conference in Kenya on his visit to Africa last December. Colin was impressed at John Bosco's faithful efforts to reach out - with very few resources - to the poor communities in and around Nairobi city centre.

Strong relationships were formed as a result of the December visit to Kenya - so strong, in fact, that it looks like Colin and and his wife Joy will be heading a team of seven people from the UK and US to go out to another pastor's conference in Nairobi in May. Your prayers for wisdom, guidance and resources would be much appreciated!

We were able to send the computers due to the generosity of staff at Kenyan Airways, who gave us a lot of help in getting the computers to Nairobi safe and sound. We give them many thanks!

On a different note, we have finally managed to get rid of much of the computer junk that we have accumulated in the last two-and-a-bit years. When we started collecting computer equipment (back early in 2001 - how long ago it all seems now!), we very enthusiastically collected huge amounts of stuff that didn't work. Not only that, it was beyond our meagre technological capabilities to get it working. The result? - a growing pile of unsightly and rusting junk that most local tips wouldn't touch unless accompanied by large sums of cash...

Praise God, Derek Perry, project coordinator for the Great Lakes (Africa) Mission, was given some names to contact (from a 'chance' meeting in a local builder's merchant). He was able to contact the right man in the right place at the right time, and two weeks later, nearly three tons of useless equipment was scrapped, crushed and removed. Huge thanks to Viridor for their help in allowing us to get rid of so much junk safely and legally.
