Gilead - a farm that can rebuild lives

t GF Dairy we produce and supply our 'Naturally Wholesome' range of milk, cream and cream cheese from our British Friesian and Dairy Shorthorn cattle, reared on an ethically-based 320 acre farm at Risdon Farm, near Okehampton, where no GM additives or pesticides are used.

We're proud to be GM and pesticide-free - more important to us, however, is GF Dairy's collaboration with the Gilead Foundations Charity. Gilead Foundations is a residential rehab centre offering help with homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, gambling, eating disorders, self-harm and other addictions. It offers the opportunity to rebuild broken lives in a working farm environment.

Gilead Foundations runs a three-phase programme for those seeking to break free from their addictions. The first phase of the detox is a primary care course lasting 10 weeks. Phase two secondary care is 20 weeks long, based on relapse prevention. A third, 30-week phase concentrates on resettling people back into society. The phases enable the residents to deal with the effects of their addiction and to begin to take responsibility for their own actions, choices, behaviour, attitudes, personal health & hygiene and daily responsibilities.

ith training, staff can help residents reclaim their confidence, develop new skills and achieve greater fulfilment in their lives. The course includes work therapy and skills training in various areas such as the farm, dairy, catering, administration and IT, building and maintenance. Residents can also learn basic skills such as numeracy, literacy, communication, first aid, food hygiene and health & safety. GF is registered with training bodies, so its users can achieve national certifications such as NVQs. It's really encouraging that 88% of those completing the course haven't relapsed since!
