Trip 2006
n
July of this year a team of 6 people embarked on a trip to Uganda!
The team had 7 girls and 1 bloke!! (Poor old granddad was
a wee outnumbered!) This team consisted of Nan (Joy), myself,
Bernice, Emily, Lisa, Jo and Liz! We all became close friends
during the visit!
We stayed
in my Grandparents house for two weeks in a little town named
Fort Portal. This was when we were introduced to some of the most
amazing people I have ever met; the servants! There were 6 of
them, however the three I grew particularly fond of and close
to were named Goretti, Marvin and Baker! They were so happy all
the time and just had so much to give!
We went to
Pastor Steven's church on both Sundays and a couple nights during
the week. Going to this church was amazing! It was like going
to a big party! They were all so excited to be there and they
had looked forward to it all week! It really touched me how happy
they all were despite their poverty.
During the
first week, we did some teaching at Njara Hill Primary school
across the road from my Grandparent's house. It was great fun!
We met some amazing students, very strong people and some inspiring
teachers! I couldn't believe how many students one teacher would
teach at one time with such little resources, yet the classes
would love it! In most activities, many of the children would
not take part; simply because there were too many of them. However
they were just as happy to watch! Which really confused me!
learnt a lot from my experience in Uganda. I admit I struggled
on an emotional level seeing what all these people were like and
their living conditions. I also found it very hard to understand
how they had so little yet gave so much. They are the happiest
people I have ever met, and the most selfless people I think I
ever will meet.
I still struggle
now when I think about it. Why is it that we have so much, yet
we keep wanting more? And how can they want to keep giving when
they have so little?
I made some
life long friends in Uganda and had some great fun. Since my return
I have received many letters, one saying white skin, black skin,
red blood, red blood. I couldn't agree more!
