GLAM report March 2010

Great Lakes (Africa) Mission is the mission arm of King's Church. We are involved in helping set up and maintain clinics, hospitals, schools, churches, orphanages and small businesses in Eastern and Central Africa.

These are some of the projects and families we're currently involved with.

KAYOLE ORPHANAGE
Jared and his wife Carren run an orphanage in the slums of Kayole, on the outskirts of Nairobi in Kenya.

Jared lost his lower left arm and suffered facial burns after falling into a fire.

Despite this handicap, he built the orphanage up - now he and Carren look after over 300 orphans and homeless children aged 6 months – 20+ years.

Funding helps provide much-needed food, education, water, electricity and medication.

KAHANGI MATERNITY PROJECT
In Kahangi village, Western Uganda, 4 –5 mothers would die every year in childbirth. To combat this, Pastor Julius and Grace began building a maternity hospital in 2007 (using bricks made in a local kiln), but ran out of money to complete it.

Funding arrived from supporters in Gloucester and the building was finally completed last year.

The unit was officially opened in Aug 2009 (amidst much jubilation!) and is already providing valuable care for families in the village. Many thanks to the generous contributors who helped get this up and running!

HELPING FAMILIES
This photo shows Jesca (far right) with her brothers, sister and mother Ruth (second from left). Ruth died in Feb 2009 from an AIDS-related illness.
Now Jesca cares for Ammon, Solomon and little Dorcas, knowing the two younger are infected with HIV. She built their house with her own hands using mud and bamboo wattle, but couldn’t afford decent roofing – until donations from Kings’s church enabled her to buy and fit metal sheets (right).

Jesca makes and sells bead necklaces and bracelets to raise money for her siblings' anti-HIV drug treatment.
