Christian
music
- dull, boring, irrelevant?
Not if
the new album by the Christian rock band Delirious? is anything
to go by, it isn't, says Jo Wright (and no, it's not a
typo - they do have a ? after their name!)
elirious?
are a UK band playing a huge part in the American Christian revival
that is taking place at the moment. They outsell many other rock
bands in the States! If you enjoy Led Zeppelin, U2, Bloc Party
then this band's new album 'Kingdom of Comfort' will definitely
appeal to you. This is a band for a new generation, 'a dancing
generation' as the words of a Matt Redman album so brilliantly
stated!
I'm sure
you've often heard it said that 'you are what you watch or listen
to!' Well, you only have to turn on the radio or television to
experience what our children and young people are exposed to,
today.
Young people
are amazing, caring and thoughtful as we can testify in our youth
work at Kings, both on Sunday night and at the KK Klub on Wednesdays.
But, they need adults that will guide them, advise them and prepare
them to stand up and say 'no' to the stuff that messes them up
and 'yes' to the experiences that will cause them to grow educationally,
recreationally and spiritually. If you want to see a perfect example
of our young people having a great time you should come to a Delirious?
concert.
We took the
KK kids to see Delirious? at Exeter a couple of years ago and
to see them dancing, singing and socialising with each other in
an atmosphere of fun and excitement due to the positive power
of God's Spirit was incredible. Even the non-Christians said that
it felt different to a traditional rock concert (and they go to
a few)! It even had us oldies dancing. If you want to know more
(or maybe even book tickets to see the band yourself!), log onto
www.delirious.co.uk as they are playing at Exeter again on 21st
October this year. We'll be there and so will the new dancing
generation of the KK Klub.
h,
and you always get some great God-given words of wisdom on the
Delirious? album covers! As Graham Cray, bishop of Maidstone writes
on the 'Kingdom of Comfort' cover: "For far too many people the
affluent society has become an end in itself; their own kingdom
of comfort, with a life of its own. In that kingdom, needs abound.
When we live beyond scarcity, 'needs' are wants in disguise, and
the wanting never ends. The kingdom of comfort is not really comfortable
at all because it never rests. There are always new things we
can't live without. We really need rescuing from a restless society
which seems to have everything but contentment, and does not know
the meaning of enough!"
Is that what
we want for our future generations? Is that what we are allowing
society to teach our children? There is another way! Jesus said
'I am the way, the truth and the life'! (John
14 v. 6). He didn't say a way, a truth, and a life! We do
have a choice and that's why God gave us free will!
