It
takes a whole village to raise a child...
Shelley
Edwards on the vital role the church can play in family life
y
parents didn’t go to church when I was young. Dad had a shop that
he opened Sunday mornings and Mum had her hands full with four
children. I started to go to church when I was in secondary school.
I
think it was probably because I wanted to get confirmed, so I
attended confirmation classes and went to the Church Youth Club
and also went to church on Sunday mornings. I look back and am
very grateful for the values and the introduction to Christianity
this all gave me. As a teenager, I remember that even the little
faith I had helped me when making decisions that steered me away
from the many pitfalls that teenagers face. When I was 19 years
old and in my first term at university I gave my whole life to
God and I have never looked back.
I
do believe it takes a whole village to raise a child. I also believe
that church, Sunday school and church youth clubs can provide
an initial foundation for young people in living their lives in
this day and age. I want the very best for my own children and
know that church is a place where they can not only make good
and lasting friendships, but where they can receive help and guidance
and develop a faith in a God who loves them and wants to lead
them in the best way for their lives - the life He created them
for. And last but not least for them to be a part of God’s most
important plan for this earth - His Bride.
NB:
Most of the churches in Tavistock, including our own at the King’s,
run lively and quality Sunday schools and youth clubs. Why
not go along, knowing your children are being taught valuable
things, and spend quality time with God yourself?!
