"Even Solomon in all his glory..."

Ruby Davey meditates on a God of variety and beauty

This springtime has proved to be one of the best yet, and as I write this I'm studying a small bunch of daffodils on my window sill. They have given me such pleasure as I gaze upon their beauty.

On thinking about this my mind turns to the story of King Solomon and what great king he was. He was also the son of David who gave us those lovely Psalms and hymns. And when God asked Solomon what he most wanted, God was so pleased when when he asked for wisdom and an understanding heart to be able to judge such a nation as Israel. He could have asked for long life and riches but he did not, and because of that God gave him riches as well.

When the Queen of Sheba came to visit him, she was so astonished at what she saw that she said to Solomon, "I had been told of your great wisdom and wealth, but now I am here and seen it for myself, I can only say that the half has not been told, for you are greater and wiser than I believed!" As my eyes stray back to the daffodils I think of our great Creator telling us that even Solomon in all glory was not arrayed like one of these. God is a God of variety and brings such beauty and loveliness into this world in which we live.

At the beginning of May I attended the wedding of my granddaughter and again I saw such beauty and loveliness as the bride and her attendants came into the church. I was reminded of how the song of Solomon describes such loveliness when he talks of the bride of Christ (the church) getting ready to meet the bridegroom (Jesus). He has bought us with a great price and redeemed us unto himself; only he can make his bride perfect, pure and spotless. He is so busy by his Holy Spirit doing that now so that when he comes to receive us unto Himself we (the church) will appear more than anything we have ever seen or witnessed. What a day that will be! Revelations 22:17 says 'And the Spirit and the bride say "Come".' Let us be ready for that great day!
