Exodus to Fort Portal
This summer a 68-year-old granny took a group of young ladies (right) out to help teach in schools in Western Uganda. This is what they got up to!

Last summer, as I was leaving a church in Fort Portal, Uganda, I said "When I come next time, I hope to bring three granddaughters with me". Was this a word of knowledge?

On the last day of June this year I went to Fort Portal again - and this time I had three grand-daughters with me and three friends. They had all approached Colin and me to ask if it was possible for them to go to Uganda this year. So we joined Colin who had set up a programme for the two weeks we were to be there, and of course we had some preparation time together.

The first week we visited some schools to teach the children. What an experience! The children were so responsive. The classes were large, but the children were so well-behaved it was a privilege to be with them. We taught arts, crafts, maths, music and songs, Bible stories, drama and games. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and were very sad to leave them. The staff were lovely too, so appreciative of what we were doing.

The churches there welcomed us, and the girls with us (ages 15-23) were impacted by the fact that the people there were so poor, but also so happy. "It's not right," was one comment. "We have so much and yet we don't seem as happy as they are." These people really love Jesus and were eager to dance, sing, pray, praise and worship. Maybe this was the key?

The second week we relaxed more and did some sightseeing. We all enjoyed going to the Safari Park and getting up really early to go to see the lions, elephants and other animals going down to the river. We really appreciated God's handiwork - it is such a beautiful place to be.

There is so much I could say. God is a great God to serve. He loves us so much and I am really grateful for what He has done for me.

In September 2005 I was diagnosed with early stages of breast cancer. In October I had one operation, then another operation in December. God gave me the strength to take a group of six to Africa, and also to teach in a school for the first time - a granny of 68! It was great fun (sometimes tiring!) but so worthwhile.

I'm looking forward to the next trip, and I know that some of the team - maybe all - want to go again. We shall have to see if this is what God is saying to us. So please pray that God will guide us. How about you joining in?
