Catalyst for Tavistock

Graham Stoate is chairman of Catalyst, the outreach initiative from local churches into schools and youth groups in the area. Here he reports on an exciting development.

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Melissa Peters to the post of Youth Worker for Tavistock and the surrounding area. Melissa will be working for Catalyst, the outreach initiative from local churches into our schools and youth groups.

Melissa is originally from the USA. She is an experienced multi-cultural youth worker, who will complete a diploma in youth and schools’ work, while serving with South West Youth Ministries (SWYM) in Plymouth, in June 2006. Currently, she is a Church Youth Worker at St Pancras’ Church at Pennycross in Plymouth, helping to lead young people’s groups, and her schools’ work has found her in John Kitto Community College. Melissa is single, at present, but has plans to marry her fiancé next year. She comes to us highly recommended by those with whom she works.

Melissa describes herself as enjoying: singing, films, music, crafts and socialising. However, she is also into martial arts and is a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. Paintball is another of her interests, and she acts as a Safety Umpire at a local Paintball venue. As if all this is not enough, Melissa is also qualified in automotive and auto body repair!

Melissa will start her post with Catalyst in September and in due course we will be encouraging her to visit churches in our locality. She hopes to move to Tavistock and we are therefore seeking to help her find accommodation within easy distance of the Methodist Church Centre in Tavistock where she has been offered a base, working alongside the youth team there. She will begin her work at Tavistock College shortly after starting her job with us, and we will be negotiating her exact role shortly after the Easter break.

It’s good to be able to pass on good news about Catalyst, and a lot will be happening in the coming weeks in preparation for Melissa’s arrival. However, due to increasing commitments elsewhere, we will shortly be saying farewell to our treasurer Guy Williams, and so this article features as one way you might be able to help us in the list below.

WE NEED YOUR HELP:

· To continue to pray for Catalyst, and for our youth worker, Melissa Peters.

· To support Catalyst financially. We would now value donations from churches and individuals alike. These can be made to our treasurer or to any trustee named below. We need to raise a sum of AT LEAST £15,000 annually to support this work at the outset.

· To offer accommodation for Melissa in, or within easy reach, of Tavistock.

· To become a trustee ~ and offer your services as Treasurer. Please get in touch with our chairman as soon as possible.

· To join our Management Committee. We are particularly keen to encourage young people; it would be good if each church could nominate a representative.

Current Trustees are: Graham Stoate (Chairman) (Whitchurch) Tel 615847 Roger Bird Tel: 810508 (Abbey Chapel); Phenella Harvey (Kings); Joan Jones (Tavistock Methodist Church); Reverend John Weir (Meavy); Guy Williams (Vineyard) (Treasurer). Please approach any one of them to offer your support or ask for further information.
