Pastor Colin Bond with some little angels from Lukuli School, Uganda!

Ever seen an angel? Would you recognise one if you did? I’m not sure that I would. We seem to be becoming a society more and more intrigued with the supernatural, the occult and all things that go bump in the night! Do you think there really is a spiritual world out there that just sometimes overlaps into our physical world?

How many angels appeared at the birth of Jesus at Bethlehem? Answer: Myriads or multitudes. How many is that? Do angels have wings? How many? Well, seraphim have six (Isa.6) but there’s no record of others having two. The Bible says, "Sometimes we entertain angels without realising it"! (Hebrews13.2) These eyes are just not too good at seeing the spiritual or supernatural. Hebrews 1 says God sends angels to serve His children.

As a boy I was most impressed by the story from a missionary returning home from Africa on furlough. He was a doctor and told us that there was a time when he had no money and needed to go down to the railhead to collect monies sent from England. Problem: there were tribal lands to cross where they would kill him if they caught him. He took just one black lad with him, hurried down to the railhead, collected from the bank and set off for home. As darkness came in he knew they would not get through the tribal country before nightfall. The two of them, praying fervently, laid down to sleep in a hollow on the hillside. At dawn they were up and away rejoicing that their God had protected them. Later the chief of the enemy tribe arrived at the mission hospital for treatment. The doctor told him of the journey and of their deliverance. "I know," said the chief, "we couldn’t attack because you were surrounded by 23 soldiers." The doctor laughed and said, "No, it was only the lad and me." When back in England he recounted the experience to his church. A member asked, "When was that?" Upon examining the date he said there were 23 church members at the prayer meeting that night!

Jesus said, "Don’t despise children for their angels are constantly before His Father in heaven." What a caring loving Father Who even delegates angels to care for children. I do hope we have not got so old and unbelieving that we’ve lost our angels.

Happy Christmas to you all from us at King’s and may you see an angel this Christmas.

Colin
