Past, Present & Future - part II

Good-Bye to Kings 1...

hese were days of happy memories when we had a band of handsome young men in red velvet bow ties playing saxophones and guitars on the corner of the Town Hall. Many shoppers from Plymouth stopped to enjoy the music. Even the locals liked it and asked us to play in the pannier market. The Covenant Players joined forces and presented drama there too (see right).
Sadly some great friends moved on. Annabel, much loved and greatly missed, followed her vocation in teaching the deaf and arrived at Bristol to take charge of that work there. She thought we had forgotten her until deception led her to a surprise party at Kings! (See left.)
Young people continued to explore the challenge of Jesus to be Lord of their lives and found the process fun as well as challenging. These young people (see right) have long since left university and found their place of work in society. Maybe you know them and their families!
Before long we are involved with Chris Cole of Plymouth Sound Radio and get roped in to help with the Cross Rhythms Festival in July, these days run at Risdon Farm, Okehampton. Now thousands attend - don't forget to book in (see ad left). As a small church that has tithed to Christian TV is it a surprise that God takes us into international radio broadcasting? Cross Rhythms shares the good news of Jesus through radio, festivals, road shows and magazine and now through the God Channel on TV.

To our dismay Francis (with family, right) from West Devon Borough Council (among other responsibilities he issued the dog licences!) heard the call to go to Sussex to help pioneer work among children, so another excellent member with family went off to serve Jesus in His Kingdom. We were encouraged to receive Tony (editor of Cross Rhythms Magazine) and family. They certainly helped with their talented contributions.

...Welcome to Kings 2!

n 1985, when we met at The Molly Owen Centre, a young policeman called Ian stood up one Sunday and quietly prophesied that God was going to give us a building to seat 500. It would not be this year nor the next. We were to fast and pray and see God's provision.

Three years later things began to move and with encouragement and generous help from Andy Coad of the Ordulph Arms, the Community Church moved into the Kings 2 building. Lloyds Bank surprised themselves with their kindness to us when they sold the building for a fraction of the selling price then lent us the money to buy it! It was a terrible shock to us all when after moving in 1990, the building was filled for the first time a fortnight later for Ian's funeral.

Little did we know what the future held for us when the plight of orphans in Africa touched our hearts! Our concern led us to invite the African Children's Choir to Tavistock. We accommodated them at ‘The Watering Hole', the Parish Church opened for their concert, the mayor and his wife (Ken and Jenny Sanders) welcomed them and the offering that night was £2,500. Few there have forgotten the impact of that occasion.

And the choir also sang at St. Rumon's! Were you (or your children) there? Have a look at the picture below!
