Soirée Africaine
A different sort of evening out! By Colin Bond

Mayor and ladies
Tavistock town mayor Norma Woodstock with Joy Bond and members of the Congolese Bread of Life church from London

Our picture shows Mrs Norma Woodcock, Lady Mayor of Tavistock with ladies from Central Africa at the "Soirée Africaine" at the King's in January. Mrs Woodcock bravely attacked African cuisine, listened to African singing, watched their dancing and enjoyed their company. Or perhaps her husband Gerry was really the brave one - in past years, these Africans were known to go marauding to capture other chief’s wives! (Today some still have more than one wife. In Uganda we learnt of a husband with two wives who wanted to pastor a church. He was told he couldn’t because he had two wives when the Bible said the pastor should have only one. However one of his wives could because she had only one husband!)

African praise
All-singing, all-dancing, full-on praise, African style!

We dined on various fish, pieces of steak, kasava, plantains, potatoes and red hot chilli! I must apologise to many - I forgot that in the heat of Central Africa they usually enjoy their food cold! The mayor welcomed our guests, enjoyed their entertainment and listened to their sad stories of the plight of those still there in Africa.
